The Hard Tackers

Break Out the grog and get ready to sing.

We have dropped anchor and we are coming ashore.

Sea Shanties and songs of the sea and rivers, by Ohio’s premier sea shanty crew.

It has been said that if it is wet, we will sing about it.

Power energy and good fun from the days of sail.

The official shanty crew of the Santa Maria, based in downtown Columbus, Ohio, The Hard Tackers are mainly a bunch of retired old fogies who have been involved in folk music for longer then they care to say. They came together as a group to sing at the opening of the Santa Maria and have been together since, performing at festivals, concerts and private parties–from the Port Clinton Walleye festival in the north, to the Portsmouth Sea Shanty Festival in the south of the state.

You will leave the concert amazed at how much fun you have had. Be prepared to sing and laugh with The Hard Tackers–the shanty crew that won the 2009 Southern Ohio Sea Shanty Festival Award.  Its members are:  John Schomburg, John Locke, Andy Beyer, Fred Bailey, Chris Bolles, Rennie Beetham, Brian Smith, Joe Cook.

Sea shanties are the work songs used on the square-rigged ships in the Age of  Sail. Their rhythms coordinated the efforts of many sailors hauling, pushing, or pumping.

A pint to many

happilyneverafter

The play is this Thursday night at 7:30 pm.  Admission is FREE! [donations accepted]  Performed by the PiB Junior Dramatic Society,  the story is about a marriage counselor coming to the fairy tale kingdom only to realize their happy endings aren’t so happy. Cinderella is obsessed with the kitchen, Sleeping Beauty only wants to sleep, and the Frog Prince thinks he is still a frog! The counselor decides to rematch the characters and rewrite their endings. How will these classic fairy tale stories end?  Come to the Put-in-Bay Town Hall upstairs Opera House to find out.  You will not be disappointed!

Thanks to the wonderful contributions of area photographers and the diligent organizational effort of Marisa Rence, the Put-in-Bay Arts Council generated significant contributions to the Opera House Restoration Fund.  Kudos to all who participated in our community’s connection to culture!
